A tragedy struck Campione this morning when a 32-year-old man lost his life during a base jumping outing. The young man, originally from Cuba, jumped from the famous local cliff at 10:50 AM, but during the flight, he lost control of his parachute and crashed against the rocks. The alarm was raised by a friend who was unable to contact him after the jump.
Rescue efforts were swift, involving the Alpine Rescue team, the 118 Verona Emergency air rescue, and the Carabinieri. However, upon reaching the incident site, rescuers found that the man was already deceased. The recovery of the body took place around 2:20 PM using a winch lowered from the helicopter. It is noted that base jumping in the area has been prohibited since a municipal ordinance was issued in 2019.
