The community of Riva del Garda has been shaken by the tragic discovery of the bodies of Hanna and Oleksiy Shabratska, a mother and son of Ukrainian origin, aged 56 and 19, respectively. The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rovereto has opened an investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding their deaths, which occurred on July 17.
According to initial reports, the two were swept away by the current approximately fifteen meters from the beach in front of Punta Lido. Here, the seabed drops sharply to a depth of twenty meters, making the area particularly dangerous despite being frequented by swimmers, even with a swimming ban in place.
Ongoing Investigations
The carabinieri in Riva are conducting the investigations into the case, and an autopsy on the bodies has already been arranged. Hanna and Oleksiy had set out from Vallarsa, near Rovereto, to spend a day at the lake. They were seen entering the water around 11:20 AM on July 16 but did not resurface.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time similar incidents have occurred in this area of the lake. The underwater topography and currents can pose a deadly threat to swimmers. Local authorities are considering additional preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
Life-Saving Intervention
During the search for the two missing individuals, coast guard rescuers saved a 14-year-old boy who was in distress in the same waters where Hanna and her son lost their lives. This timely intervention prevented another tragedy.
