On May 25, 2024, Riva del Garda will pay tribute to Lucillo Merci, a fellow citizen who left an indelible mark on local history. The day will be dedicated to the memory of Merci, known for his courage and generosity during World War II.
Lucillo Merci was born in Riva del Garda and distinguished himself by providing false documents to hundreds of Jews destined for deportation, saving over 400 lives. This heroic act makes him a prominent figure in the local community.
The commemoration will begin at 5:30 pm with a meeting in the courtyard of the Rocca. Professor Marialuisa Crosina and Dr. Paolo Tessadri will engage in a dialogue with Professor Nico Pirozzi, author of the book “Salonicco 1943. Agony and Death of the Jerusalem of the Balkans.” This event will provide an opportunity to delve into the history of Lucillo Merci and the historical context in which he operated.
At 8:30 pm, also in the courtyard of the Rocca, a symphony concert by the Princeton High School Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Robert Loughran, will take place. The musical program will range from Bach to John Lennon, offering a spatio-temporal journey in music.
Admission to the events is free but requires mandatory reservation.
