The Lonato wastewater treatment plant emerges as the preferred solution over the dual Gavardo-Montichiari system, according to recent discussions held in Rome. The Deputy Minister for the Environment, Vannia Gava, highlighted the significant advantages that a single Garda purification system in the municipality of Lonato could offer, including lower investment and management costs, as well as the development of a more efficient facility. This decision was made in light of new European regulations that require the integration of photovoltaic systems, which are not feasible in the areas of Gavardo and Montichiari.
The new wastewater treatment plant is designed to discharge treated water into the Chiese River and is expected to be completed by 2030, coinciding with the decommissioning of the sub-lake pipelines. The meeting was also attended by the Prefect of Brescia, Andrea Polichetti, and Senator Maria Stella Gelmini, underscoring the project’s importance for the environmental sustainability of the Brescia shore of the lake. Gava emphasized the need for urgent action, supported by a funding allocation already planned by the MASE totaling 100 million euros.
