A potential 25% tariff from the USA on Italian agri-food exports could lead to an increase in costs for American consumers of over 250 million euros just for products coming from Lombardy. This estimate was provided by Coldiretti, which analyzed Istat data, highlighting that the United States is the third largest market for Lombardy’s agri-food products, following France and Germany, but is the top partner outside the EU. If such tariffs were applied to the entire Italian agri-food sector, losses could reach up to 2 billion euros, significantly impacting purchases by American consumers.
Gianfranco Comincioli, president of Coldiretti Lombardia, expressed concern about the situation, emphasizing the need for diplomatic actions to avoid a trade war that would be detrimental to both European and American businesses. Among the main Lombard products exported to the United States are beverages, dairy products, and processed meats. Coldiretti also raised questions about the possible response of the European Union in the event of U.S. tariffs being imposed, recalling previous tariff measures taken in response to trade policies during the first Trump administration.
