The community of Valeggio sul Mincio has mobilized against the project for an asbestos landfill, collecting almost 12,000 signatures in protest. The Quaderni Valeggio Territorial Defense Committee delivered the signatures to the Veneto Region during a demonstration held yesterday in Venice.
Despite adverse weather conditions, the Quaderni Valeggio Territorial Defense Committee traveled to Venice to present the signatures collected against the landfill project located on the border with Villafranca di Verona. The meeting with regional representatives took place at Palazzo Ferro Fini, where committee members met various regional councilors who support the cause.
The chosen day coincided with the discussion in the Regional Council of motion no. 533, entitled “Updating the Waste Plan.” This motion, proposed by several councilors including Stefano Valdegamberi and Marco Andreoli, aimed to eliminate an exception introduced in the regional plan for the management of urban and special waste.
The committee members were welcomed by the signatories of the motion and other councilors who expressed their support for the cause. The almost 12,000 signatures collected in a few months were handed over to the present political representatives.
Despite the commitment and presence of the protesters, the session of the Regional Council could not continue in the afternoon as planned. Consequently, the discussion on motion no. 533 was postponed to a future meeting along with other items on the agenda.
The Quaderni Valeggio Territorial Defense Committee reiterated its support for the regional councilors who are promoting the restoration of the Regional Waste Plan in its original version. This plan, in fact, prohibited the construction of landfills in the municipalities identified by DCR 62/06 as recharge areas for the second largest aquifer in Europe.
The mobilization of the local community continues to be strong and determined in opposing a project considered harmful to the environment and public health in the areas around Lake Garda.
