The mayor of Valeggio sul Mincio, Alessandro Gardoni, will present a motion at the municipal council on Thursday, November 7, 2024, urging the Veneto Region to reconsider the exemption introduced by Dgr n. 988/22, which allows the construction of landfills, including those for asbestos-containing waste, in aquifer recharge areas, affecting the territory of Valeggio as well. Gardoni emphasized the importance of a united front between the administration and citizens to protect environmental health and the local landscape heritage, hoping for constructive dialogue with the Region.
The motion calls for an immediate amendment to the Waste Plan to prohibit the establishment or expansion of landfills in high plain areas subject to aquifer recharge, as previously established by Dcr n. 62/06. Gardoni also recalled the efforts made by his administration to address the issue of the Cà Baldassarre landfill, securing over 2.4 million euros from the Region in 2021 for the permanent closure of the site, following years of costly leachate management interventions. “Valeggio and its citizens have already given enough,” the mayor concluded, reiterating the importance of preventing new landfills in the area.
