During the sixth meeting of the “Water Value for Italy” Community, significant data regarding the water footprint in our country was presented, highlighting that each Italian consumes an average of 6,300 liters of water per day, placing Italy in seventh place among the countries of the European Union. This figure encompasses both direct and indirect consumption, with a substantial portion attributed to the impact of consumed products. Despite Italy’s leading position with billions of cubic meters used annually, totaling 130 billion m³, it has emerged that there are areas for improvement in the sustainable management of water resources.
The analysis revealed that nations with a higher per capita water footprint than Italy include Luxembourg and Portugal, while France and Germany show significantly lower consumption. Benedetta Brioschi from TEHA emphasized the importance of strategies such as enhancing production efficiency and adopting sustainable technologies to address the issue of pollution linked to water consumption. The community is growing with new key players joining in to promote more responsible and sustainable management of water resources in Italy.
