A recent control operation has led to the fines of over 30 poachers on the lower Garda, caught red-handed while attempting to catch the increasingly rare coregone. Volunteer fish wardens, along with the Provincial Police and the Carabinieri’s Forest Unit, discovered the poachers using prohibited equipment such as fishing rods and scales. Fines can reach up to 2000 euros, in a context where fishing for this species is banned until January 31, coinciding with the breeding season.
Despite the new regulations that came into effect on October 8 aimed at protecting the coregone, surveillance will be intensified in the coming days to combat illegal activities. The law stipulates that each amateur fisherman cannot catch more than ten coregones per day, all with a minimum size of 30 centimeters. These measures are crucial to ensure the natural reproduction of the coregone in the lake, especially after the ban on artificial restocking imposed by the Ministry in 2021. The fight against poaching proves essential to preserve this threatened species and ensure its survival in local waters.
