The daughter of Wendy, a sloth entrusted to the Bussolengo Park by the Forest Carabinieri in 2010, has embarked on a journey to the Zoom Biopark in Turin. Alongside a companion, the two two-toed sloths were transported in specially designed crates to ensure their comfort and safety. Upon arrival, they will be welcomed into a 300-square-meter area that also houses tropical butterflies and panther chameleons. This transfer represents a new opportunity for wildlife conservation, as both young mammals could contribute to a new lineage.
Camillo Sandri, the zoological director of the Openature group, emphasizes the importance of this project in the fight against species decline, as highlighted by the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Wendy’s story is particularly significant: after being rescued from unsuitable living conditions, she has demonstrated remarkable reproductive capabilities with six offspring already born. The conservation of local wildlife also relies on initiatives like these, which are crucial for ensuring the survival of species threatened by deforestation in their native habitats.
