Calcinato: Fish Die-off Reported in the Chiese River by the Citizens’ Committee. In recent hours, the Calcinato Citizens’ Committee has reported a troubling incident of fish mortality that occurred on Friday, February 28, in the stretch of the Chiese River between Ponte San Marco and Calcinatello. After receiving several reports, the Committee contacted the relevant authorities, including the Mayor and the Environmental Councillor. On March 1, the ATS intervened to collect dead specimens and sample the water, while Committee members are in constant communication with the Carabinieri and ARPA to receive updates on the situation.
Initial analyses indicate that the species most affected is the Barbus, with signs of asphyxiation and abnormal behaviors observed in other fish species. The problem appears to extend over a considerable distance of the river upstream of Ponte San Marco. The Committee emphasizes the urgency of addressing the issue, given the river’s abundant water flow, raising questions about what might happen during periods of water scarcity. The Brescia Fishermen’s Union has also expressed concern, calling for swift actions to identify those responsible and to prevent the recurrence of such events without clear consequences.
