Riva del Garda – On Saturday, June 29th, Mayor Cristina Santi and Sports Councilor Lorenzo Pozzer welcomed sailors Chiara Benini Floriani and Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini at the town hall. The two athletes from Fraglia Vela will represent Italy at the Paris Olympics, competing in Marseille from July 28th to August 8th in the Ilca 6 and Ilca 7 classes respectively.
During the meeting, which was also attended by the athletes’ parents and Fraglia Vela President Andrea Camin, the mayor expressed great pride in the participation of the two young athletes in the Olympics, attributing their success to their individual abilities and the support of their families and the sailing society. Councilor Pozzer praised the athletes for bringing prestige to the city, while Camin thanked the municipal administration for their continued support.
Chiara Benini Floriani, 22 years old, has distinguished herself in the international sailing scene, winning silver at the European and Under 21 World Championships in 2021 and finishing third in the Olympic test event in Marseille in 2023. Although Carolina Albano had initially secured the Olympic spot, the Italian Sailing Federation chose Chiara for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini, born in Rome but raised in Scotland, won gold at the Under 21 World and European Championships in the Laser Standard under the British flag in 2014. After serious injuries that prevented him from competing in the Tokyo 2020 Games, he changed federations, representing Italy since 2022 and immediately achieving significant results, including a fifth-place finish at the 2023 World Championships.
