The city of Lonato del Garda is preparing to welcome the writer Donatella Di Pietrantonio, the fresh winner of the prestigious Strega Prize 2024. The event will take place on July 7th in the charming Gardens of the Casa del Podestà, the headquarters of the Ugo Da Como Foundation, or in the Rocca in case of bad weather.
For the third consecutive year, the Ugo Da Como Foundation in Lonato del Garda will host the winner of the Strega Prize in one of their first public appearances after the official award ceremony. This year, the honor goes to Donatella Di Pietrantonio, the author of “L’età fragile” published by Einaudi.
The prize was awarded during a ceremony held at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome, broadcast live on Rai Tre. Among the finalists of the LXXVIII edition were six authors, as provided for in Article 7 of the regulations, which ensures the presence of works from medium-small publishers in the final phase. The books that competed for the title were:
– Paolo Di Paolo with “Romanzo senza umani” (Feltrinelli)
– Donatella Di Pietrantonio with “L’età fragile” (Einaudi)
– Tommaso Giartosio with “Autobiogrammatica” (minimum fax)
– Raffaella Romagnolo with “Aggiustare l’universo” (Mondadori)
– Chiara Valerio with “Chi dice e chi tace” (Sellerio)
– Dario Voltolini with “Invernale” (La nave di Teseo)
The victory of Donatella Di Pietrantonio did not come as a surprise to industry insiders; she had already been awarded the Strega Giovani, a recognition given by a jury of teenagers between the ages of 16 and 18 from over a hundred Italian and foreign high schools. With 189 votes out of a total of 644 voters, the writer took first place, followed by Dario Voltolini (“Invernale”) with 143 votes and Chiara Valerio (“Chi dice e chi tace”) with 138 votes.
“L’età fragile,” described as “the story of a family suspended in the secret of trauma,” is set in Abruzzo and tells the painful yet healing events of a mother trapped between her father’s severity and her daughter’s silence. Vittorio Lingiardi presented the work to the Strega jury, praising the author’s ability to transform pain into healing through words.
