A sighting of “strange” crayfish has raised concerns in Padenghe sul Garda, where residents are reporting a massive die-off of specimens along the beaches. These are Procambarus clarkii, commonly known as “Louisiana crayfish,” which are native to the United States and have already established themselves in Italy due to uncontrolled introduction. The situation is further complicated by the presence of Orconectes limosus, the American crayfish, both of which are invasive species rapidly proliferating in the area.
The intense summer heat and recent adverse weather conditions, including strong winds, have contributed to driving these crayfish ashore. Experts warn that the spread of these species could have significant ecological consequences for the Lake Garda ecosystem, which is already under strain from various environmental issues.
