After receiving unanimous approval in the Regional Council of Lombardy, the motion aimed at intensifying tracing and treatment for Hepatitis C, promoted by Claudia Carzeri, has arrived in Rome. Honorable Stefano Benigni has taken charge of this important initiative, committing to bring it to the attention of the Ministry and the Government.
The main objective of the motion is to track down undiagnosed cases of Hepatitis C, estimated to be around 20,000 in Lombardy alone. To achieve this, the motion proposes to expand the free screening not only to people born between 1969 and 1989 but also to those born between 1948 and 1968. This will allow for the timely identification of affected individuals and the necessary treatment.
The motion also involves the active participation of pharmacies and general practitioners to increase the population’s participation in the HCV screening campaign. These professionals will be called upon not only to directly perform the tests but also to raise awareness among their patients about the importance of prevention.
In the past, Lombardy has been a pioneer in implementing the screening model established by the Ministry of Health, based on specific age groups. Now, the aim is to expand this approach to include individuals over the age of 50-55, considered to be at higher risk.
Claudia Carzeri stated, “Now is the time to expand the target population to those at higher risk of infection… We must eradicate this disease, and prevention is the key to future healthcare; I will continue to focus my political action on this aspect.”
