The Lombardy Region has launched an innovative program for free prostate cancer screening, presented at a press conference at Palazzo Lombardia by the Welfare Councillor, Guido Bertolaso. This initiative, the first of its kind in Italy, aims to facilitate the early diagnosis of prostate carcinoma, increasing the chances of recovery and reducing the need for invasive treatments. Currently, those born in November 1974 and later are eligible to participate in the screening; each month, citizens turning 50 will be added to the program. Ultimately, the program will target men aged 50 to 70 residing in Lombardy.
To access the program, it is necessary to complete a questionnaire available in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), without the need for a referral from a primary care physician for the PSA test. The test will be conducted at participating laboratories and allows for the identification of any prostate abnormalities through a simple blood test. If a positive result for cancer is detected, the patient will be immediately followed by the Regional Health Service to determine the best therapeutic pathway.
