The mayor of Pozzolengo, Paolo Bellini, has officially denied the passage of the Giro d’Italia through the municipality. According to the mayor, his “no” is a provocation due to several issues in the organization of the event and the lack of involvement from the municipality. One of the main reasons for the decision is the complete closure of the main artery in Pozzolengo, which is a heavily traveled and strategic road. Additionally, the municipality does not have the necessary forces and resources to ensure the safety of the passage.
The stage in question would have seen the 176 riders cross via Fondo Irta, passing by the castle and cutting through the town. However, according to Bellini, men and resources that the municipality does not possess would be necessary to secure this route.
Pozzolengo’s decision also affects the other municipalities that are part of the stage route. Despite the unforeseen circumstance, Desenzano’s councilor Pietro Avanzi is confident in the possibility of finding a solution by engaging in dialogue with Pozzolengo. Desenzano remains available to offer support to the municipality in finding the necessary resources.
The situation presents itself as an earthquake in the organization of the Giro d’Italia just six weeks before the event. It will be necessary to resolve this controversy as soon as possible so that the time trial stage can take place regularly.
