On May 18th, Desenzano del Garda will host the time trial stage of the Giro d’Italia, a highly anticipated event for cycling enthusiasts. In preparation for this special day, it is important to be informed about all the provisions and restrictions that will be implemented to ensure the proper running of the race and the safety of participants and spectators.
To facilitate the movement of visitors, a free shuttle bus service will be activated. Two buses will be available, operating continuously from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. The buses will depart from the parking lot in Loc. Perla and follow the route along Viale Marconi to the roundabout of Viale Cavour – Via Sant’Angela Merici, where a temporary stop will be set up. The service is completely free, and the parking lots in Loc. Perla will be supervised by volunteers, although they will not be guarded.
During the day of May 18th, the bypass road towards Lonato/Brescia will be open to traffic, as well as in the direction of Peschiera del Garda. The only exit that will be closed is San Martino della Battaglia due to the Giro d’Italia crossing along Via dei Colli Storici. As for the highway, the Sirmione tollgate will be closed for both entry and exit, while the Desenzano del Garda tollgate will be open for both entry and exit.
During the day of May 18th, the urban transport service will only be available on Line 3 (red). The route will start from the train station and return to the same. The following stops will be made along the route: Via Masaccio (north side stop facing the station), Piazza Einaudi, Via Cavour, Via Marconi, Viale Andreis, Via Montecroce, Poliambulatori dell’Ospedale, Via Mezzocolle, Via Vicina, Via Grezze, Via delle Mimose, Via degli Oleandri, Via Grezze, Via El Alamein, Via Monte Suello, Via Caduti dei Lager, and others. It is recommended to check the specific timetables and routes of Line 3 to be informed about any changes.
As stated in Municipal Order No. 14 of April 9, 2024, all educational activities of all levels will be suspended in public and private schools in Desenzano del Garda during the day of May 18th. Administrative activities, however, will proceed as usual.
The arrival of the Giro d’Italia stage is scheduled on Viale Anelli – Lungolago C. Battisti, one of the main streets of Desenzano del Garda. It will be an exciting moment for cycling enthusiasts who will be able to witness the arrival of the riders and experience the unique atmosphere of the Corsa Rosa.
At the Spiaggia d’Oro in Desenzano del Garda, the Open Village – Giroland will be set up, a village dedicated to adults and children where they can immerse themselves in the history and symbols of the Giro d’Italia. Sponsors, a giant screen, and entertainment with the music of RTL 102.5 will be present. It will be an opportunity to spend a fun and engaging day dedicated to sports.
Despite the barriers along the Lungolago on both sides, access to the boats will be guaranteed through specially established passages at the docks. Dedicated personnel will ensure safe crossing.
Regarding commercial activities in the historic center, it is important to follow the provisions contained in Municipal Order No. 72/2024 of the Local Police. Loading and unloading of goods will be allowed on May 17th from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. However, on Saturday, May 18th, the authorization for loading and unloading will be revoked for productive/commercial activities in all areas affected by the prohibitions.
Some parking spaces in the historic center will be reserved for RCS, the company that manages the Giro d’Italia. It is important to pay attention to the transit and parking prohibitions indicated in the appropriate road signs to avoid fines or forced vehicle removal.
Medical stations will be set up along the entire route of the Giro d’Italia stage to ensure a rapid response in case of emergencies. Ambulances and medical personnel will be present to intervene if necessary along the entire route.
During the day of May 18th, some roads will be closed to traffic, and parking and stopping will be prohibited along the entire route of the Giro d’Italia stage. Appropriate road signs will indicate the prohibitions and possible alternatives for motorists.
To allow holders of disabled parking permits to reach the historic center on May 18th, reserved parking areas will be established. Suitable areas will be available in Via N. Sauro, Piazza Duomo, and Piazzale Bagatta.
Before the arrival of the riders, it will be possible to witness the passage of “La Carovana del Giro d’Italia.” This is a convoy of about 30 branded vehicles from the sponsors of the Corsa Rosa that precede the cyclists to entertain the audience. The Carovana will stop in some locations for about 20 minutes to carry out entertainment activities and distribute gadgets.
