The construction of the San Martino high-speed train station continues to raise concerns over the skyrocketing costs of infrastructure. According to the 2024 report from the Territorial Infrastructure Observatory, the projected cost for the project has exceeded 200 million euros, a significant increase from the 60 million initially estimated four years ago. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the procedures are still in the preliminary stages, suggesting that the budget may increase even more in the coming years.
In addition to the station’s costs, all the necessary ancillary works to ensure accessibility to the facility remain to be designed and financed, as it would otherwise be isolated from populated areas and major connecting routes. These works will be entirely the responsibility of local authorities, such as the Region, Province, and Municipalities. Andrea Spiller from the Five Star Movement has expressed his concerns regarding the economic and technical sustainability of the project, warning that without a decisive response from citizens and institutions, there is a risk of severe deterioration in service and a negative impact on the territory.
