Fishermen in Lake Garda are facing an unprecedented crisis, with a 90% drop in catch compared to previous years. Simone Bocchio, a fourth-generation professional fisherman, has reported that nets are often empty and many species, such as whitefish, perch, and sardines, are practically disappearing. The situation is so severe that many fishermen are considering leaving the profession.
The halt in whitefish fishing has had a devastating impact on the industry, which already had a reduced number of fishermen: about 35 on the Brescia side and 60 on the Verona side. The drastic decrease in sardines and perch further worsens the situation. Fishermen are organizing a meeting in August in Manerba to discuss the future of fishing in the lake. The crisis is not only jeopardizing local traditions but also the economy associated with fishing in the region.
