The Lombardy Region has recently taken a significant step in its commitment against Hepatitis C, one of the most serious and widely neglected liver diseases. A motion, led by councilor Claudia Carzeri and unanimously supported by the Regional Council, has marked a turning point, directing concrete actions to improve health policies regarding the screening and treatment of Hepatitis C.
The initiative involves a significant expansion of the age range of the population eligible for free screening, extending it to those born between 1948 and 1968. This extension is supported by an investment of 13 million euros from the national fund of 71.5 million euros allocated for such health campaigns, ensuring that the implementation of this measure will not result in additional costs for the regional budget.
To further increase the effectiveness of this campaign, the motion promotes close collaboration with pharmacies and general practitioners. The goal is to facilitate access to screenings, encouraging citizens to undergo tests directly at primary care points. This strategy not only increases participation but also raises awareness about the relevance of these checks for the prevention of severe complications, such as liver cancer.
The adoption of the motion is not only a step forward in the treatment of Hepatitis C but also an example of cross-party and unified health policy. Councilor Carzeri, along with fellow councilors Bestetti and Casati and the President of the Health Commission, Patrizia Baffi, has received broad cross-party support for this project, highlighting the importance and urgency of effective interventions in the prevention of infectious diseases. The fight against Hepatitis C in Lombardy is strengthened, projecting the region as a model of responsibility and innovation in public health.
