The project for the Lonato wastewater treatment plant has been officially announced, with a total investment of 240 million euros, expected to be completed by 2035. This new Garda purification facility, located 4 km from Lonato, will involve the construction of over 100 kilometers of pipelines and 35 pumping stations. The decision to opt for a single facility instead of two separate ones in Gavardo and Montichiari was made during a steering committee convened at the Ministry of Ecological Transition last December, focusing on reducing costs and shortening construction times.
The plant will have a designed capacity to treat wastewater equivalent to that produced by 200,000 inhabitants and will be powered by a sustainable energy system aiming to achieve energy neutrality by 2045. The annual management cost of the plant is estimated at around 8.5 million euros, with part of the funding coming from the tourist tax of the municipalities around Lake Garda. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with subsequent phases planned until the decommissioning of the existing facilities.
