Recently, the Pederzoli Hospital in Peschiera del Garda has made headlines for its Lung Unit, a cutting-edge facility dedicated to the treatment of lung cancer. This unit, operational since 2020, was among the first in Italy to implement an integrated care model, involving various medical specialties such as pulmonology, thoracic surgery, and thoracic oncology. Over the past two years, the Lung Unit has managed approximately 400 new cases and performed over 90 complex surgical procedures, highlighting the importance of expert centers in ensuring the best possible treatment for patients with thoracic and pulmonary malignancies.
During the recent national congress in Rome, Dr. Antonio Santo, president of the Fonicap Foundation and head of the Lung Unit at Pederzoli, emphasized the urgency of forming multidisciplinary teams to effectively tackle this disease. Currently, it is estimated that about 50% of patients do not receive adequate care due to a lack of specialized centers. The goal is to expand this model to other regions of Italy, making Lung Units a well-established reality in the fight against lung cancer.
