The Sirmione Photo Residency 2024 has its protagonist: Mattia Marzorati, a talented photographer from Como, has been chosen for this prestigious artistic residency. The commission, led by Andréa Holzherr from Magnum Photos, selected his project from a total of 125 applications from 15 different countries.
The jury had a difficult task, given the high quality of the proposals received. This reflects the growing interest and established reputation of the Sirmione Photography Prize over the years. For the first time, participants were asked to submit both a completed project and a specific project proposal for the residency in Sirmione.
Mattia Marzorati impressed the jury with two distinct but coherent works on environmental themes. The first is “La terra dei buchi” (The Land of Holes), a project from 2021 that explores environmental issues in the province of Brescia. The images document problems such as waste disposal, mafia infiltration, and the devastating effects on the local territory.
The second work will be developed during his residency in Sirmione and is titled “venatùra”. This project aims to portray Sirmione through a focused lens on the nature of the territory, with particular attention to water, flora, and local rocks. The photographic investigation will also include aerial mapping of the coasts and the surrounding body of water.
Marzorati will work closely with Andréa Holzherr and Ludovica Pellegatta from Magnum Photos to realize “venatùra”. This work will aim to capture the current state of nature in Sirmione, creating a significant visual document from both a historical and artistic perspective.
Born in Cantù in 1992, Mattia Marzorati began his professional journey in the field of international cooperation before dedicating himself to photography in 2015 in Peru. He studied photography in Granada and has published various reportages in Italian and foreign media. His works have been exhibited in numerous international exhibitions.
During his stay in Sirmione, it will also be possible to meet Simona Ghizzoni, the resident photographer of 2023, who will present the book resulting from her experience in the previous year.
There is great anticipation for Mattia Marzorati’s new works: his commitment to environmental issues promises to offer a deep and sensitive look at the current state of Lake Garda and its natural wonders.
