A motion against asbestos landfills on aquifers has been presented in the Regional Council of Veneto. The regional councillors have listened to the requests of the Anti Landfill Committee Cà Balestra in the Quaderni area of Villafranca and have presented the motion with the aim of reinstating the absolute ban on the construction of landfills in aquifer recharge zones.
The Regional Government had removed this ban in 2022, including a specific exemption in the Waste Plan update. This exemption has allowed the submission of projects for asbestos landfills in Villafranca di Verona and Valeggio sul Mincio.
The Anti Landfill Committee Cà Balestra argues that reinstating the absolute ban is essential to protect aquifers and avoid potential contamination risks in the numerous quarries in these delicate areas.
The Committee thanks the regional councillors who have signed the motion for their attention and sensitivity towards the protection of the environment and health.
The Committee also assures the presence of a delegation at the discussion session of the motion in the Regional Council, hoping that it will take place as soon as possible given the importance and relevance of the issue.
