Tilling and Leveling of Beaches: Environmental Associations Sound the Alarm Recent transformations along the shores of Lake Garda, particularly the expansion of lakeside promenades and the preparation of beaches for the summer season, have raised concerns among environmental associations. WWF Bergamo Brescia, the Union of Sport Fishermen of Garda (UPSdG), and Legambiente have signed a document addressed to the mayors of the lakeside municipalities and other local authorities, expressing their worries about the current management of the lakeside areas. These interventions could jeopardize the balance of a delicate ecosystem that is crucial for various fish species, some of which are threatened.
In their joint communication, the associations request to “suspend and limit the activities of tilling and leveling” the beaches, emphasizing the importance of preserving the area’s biodiversity not only for aesthetic reasons but as an essential part of the ecosystem’s health. Furthermore, they propose the idea of designating certain beaches for the reproduction of at-risk species. The appeal concludes with a request for local administrations to collaborate with the Basin Authority to develop a protocol that ensures the protection of the lake’s ecological balance, thereby balancing tourism and environmental conservation.
