A new episode of ghost net recovery has occurred in the waters of Lake Garda, near the town of Pisenze close to Rocca di Manerba. On Monday, July 1st, a young person with a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) spotted an approximately 80-meter-long net and promptly alerted the authorities. The Coast Guard, supported by volunteers from WWF Bergamo-Brescia, quickly intervened to remove the net, which posed a danger to both aquatic wildlife and swimmers as it was suspended just a few meters below the water’s surface.
The WWF Bergamo-Brescia described the scene as “disturbing” due to the numerous trapped animals. This event highlights the persistent threat of ghost nets in Lake Garda, which continue to damage the ecosystem. The collaboration between citizens and authorities proves crucial for safeguarding the lake environment, demonstrating the importance of keeping attention on these issues and responding promptly.
