Rescued a trapped and injured mallard from an abandoned net in Desenzano. The past few days have seen yet another incident highlighting the danger of abandoned nets in Lake Garda for the local wildlife. On April 19th, volunteers from WWF Brescia-Bergamo found and rescued a mallard near the sailing club in Desenzano.
The poor bird had become trapped in a piece of nylon net from old “roste” nets, which were used years ago for eel fishing. The net had wrapped around the bird’s neck, causing necrosis in its wing and even blocking one of its legs. Once freed from the net, the mallard was taken to the WWF’s C.R.A.S in Valpredina to receive necessary treatment.
This incident is just one of many cases where water birds and fish fall victim to waste abandoned by humans in the lake. It is therefore crucial to closely monitor these harmful presence and proceed with their removal, as recently done in Sirmione, where volunteers from WWF Bergamo-Brescia recovered old eel nets that had been abandoned in the waters of the area for a long time.
Abandoned nets not only pose a risk to the health of the animals that become trapped in them, but also to the surrounding environment. In fact, the nylon threads of the nets release microplastics into the water, contributing to the contamination of the lake.
