On Saturday, July 13th, the Brolio Park in Riva del Garda will host the long-awaited Sardelada, a festival dedicated to lake fish organized by the Friends of Tirlindana Association. This event, deeply rooted in local tradition, offers visitors the opportunity to taste various preparations of lake sardines.
Starting at 6:30 pm, participants will be able to savor fried, grilled, and “sisam” sardines, an ancient flavored preservation technique typical of Lake Garda. The dishes will be accompanied by white wine, beer, and water.
The Lake Sardine, also known as agone, is abundant in Lake Garda. Originally a marine species, it seems that millennia ago it migrated up the Po and Mincio rivers to settle in the freshwater of the lake. It is hypothesized that a period of drought prevented their return to the sea, leading this species to adapt perfectly to the lake environment. Its flesh is appreciated for its delicate flavor compared to marine fish.
Founded in 1997, the Friends of Tirlindana Association was born out of the desire of a group of friends to protect and enhance the fish heritage of the lake. Among the association’s main objectives are the balanced restocking of fish species, the conservation of natural habitats, and the promotion of local traditions through events such as competitions and exhibitions.
The association members are actively involved in fishing for sardines using only fishing rods to ensure the necessary quantity for the festival.
Therefore, the Sardelada represents not only an opportunity to taste typical dishes but also an important moment to raise awareness in the community about the preservation of the lake ecosystem.
The event will take place at the Brolio Park in Riva del Garda; further details on access can be found through the GPS coordinates provided by the organizers.
