A tragic event shook the community of Villafranca di Verona yesterday evening, Wednesday, October 19th. A fight between carnival workers, stemming from issues related to the placement of traveling attractions, escalated into a shooting that resulted in the death of an elderly man.
The altercation broke out around 9 PM near Piazza del Castello and involved about ten people. During the initial scuffle, a young carnival worker was seriously injured and urgently transported to Verona Borgo Trento Hospital for treatment.
Although the situation seemed to have temporarily calmed down, the parties involved later moved to Viale Olimpia with the apparent intention of peacefully resolving the conflict. However, tensions flared up again to the point where one of those present pulled out a gun and opened fire.
The 75-year-old man who was shot was immediately assisted by emergency personnel and taken to Villafranca Hospital. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the doctors, the man passed away in the early hours of today, Thursday, October 20th.
In addition to the fatality, another member of the carnival workers group was seriously injured. A 49-year-old man suffered a serious leg injury caused by gunshots and was also admitted to the same hospital.
Law enforcement authorities promptly responded to the scene of the incident, including the local Carabinieri station, the investigative unit of the Verona Provincial Command, and experts from the Scientific Investigation Section (SIS). The investigation is currently being conducted under the supervision of the Verona Public Prosecutor’s Office to clarify all the dynamics of the event and identify any possible responsibilities.
