During the general assembly of the Garda Community, a significant ceremony took place where the delegate to the presidency, Marcello Cobelli, presented the attendees with a reproduction of an ancient map of Lago di Garda, crafted on handmade paper by the master papermakers of Toscolano Paper. This map, dating back to 1708 and created by Johann C. Steinberger, was published in Nuremberg as part of Johann C. Volckamer’s botanical work “Nurnberische Hesperides,” which focused on the cultivation of citrus fruits.
The reproduction represents one of the few historical maps dedicated to the lake and, while not designed for geographical precision, accurately highlights the inhabited areas present in the region, including smaller settlements. This initiative not only celebrates the art of traditional cartography but also emphasizes the historical and cultural significance of the lake as a whole.
