Tignale and Gardone: Initiatives for International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025
January marks a significant moment for historical reflection, with events dedicated to International Holocaust Remembrance Day scheduled in Tignale and Gardone. The commemorations will take place on January 25 and 27, focusing particularly on the history of Jews in the Garda area between 1934 and 1938.
The meeting in Tignale, set for Saturday, January 25 at the Auditorium of Gardola, will feature Professor Bruno Festa as the main speaker. His presentation will focus on the experiences of Jews who, fleeing Nazi Germany, found refuge in the Lake Garda region. This historical period was marked by a significant migration of Jewish families to Italy, where many sought safety from the escalating persecutions.
Professor Festa will present the findings of his research on this sensitive topic, highlighting how many families chose to send their children to Italy to protect them from the growing antisemitism. Once they arrived in Garda, these individuals managed to integrate into the agricultural sector and local educational institutions. Professor Festa’s research culminates with the enactment of Italian racial laws in 1938 and the subsequent measures that severely impacted Jewish communities until 1940.
Another meeting will be held in Gardone on January 27 at 6 PM at the town hall in Piazza Scarpetta. This event will also delve into the same themes discussed in the Tignale conference.
These events represent an important opportunity to remember the historical events related to the Jewish presence in our region during a dark period of European history.
