On the occasion of the centenary of the passing of Eleonora Duse, the Laghetto delle Danze at the Vittoriale degli Italiani is set to host a special event. On Sunday, September 15, at 9 PM, “The Poet and His Diva” will take the stage, featuring the actor Alessandro Preziosi, directed by Tommaso Mattei and with dramaturgy by Giordano Bruno Guerri and Maria Pia Pagani. The performance will be enhanced by live music from maestro Carlo Guaitoli on the piano.
An Unforgettable Bond
The theatrical representation is inspired by a poignant letter written by Gabriele d’Annunzio after the actress’s death in Pittsburgh. In this letter, d’Annunzio reflects on their profound connection, highlighting how Duse influenced not only his personal life but also his artistic output. The recital promises to guide the audience through a stream of consciousness that explores the intertwined lives of the Poet and the Diva, transforming their relationship into an existential parable that continues to captivate over time.
Celebration of the Great Italian Actress
Giordano Bruno Guerri, president of the Vittoriale and the National Committee for the centenary celebrations of Eleonora Duse’s death, emphasized the significance of this event. He stated, “We opened this centenary at the beginning of the year with an exhibition dedicated to Duse. This anniversary is an opportunity to evoke the multifaceted figure of one of the greatest Italian actresses and her tumultuous love affair with d’Annunzio.” He also expressed satisfaction with Alessandro Preziosi’s presence in the summer program at the Vittoriale, thereby contributing to the cultural vision of the institution.

The event is produced by Pato srl in collaboration with the Teatro Stabile del Veneto – Teatro Nazionale and is an integral part of the special project “DonnaDuse” promoted by the Ministry of Culture.
