A serious act of vandalism was discovered at the cemetery of Desenzano del Garda, where the flower basket that the local ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans) had placed on April 25th in front of the tomb of partisan Giuseppe Malvezzi was destroyed by unknown individuals. “We immediately informed Mayor Malinverno,” said ANPI President Myriam Fattori, “and we filed a report with the Police Commissioner.”
Giuseppe Malvezzi, born on February 5, 1912 in Desenzano, was captured, tortured, and killed by the Nazi-fascists in Rezzato on April 28, 1945. The central square of Desenzano is dedicated to him and his young life, which was cut short at the age of 33, along with the lives of many other partisans at the end of the war.
Fattori expressed her dismay at the incident, calling it a “stupid and offensive act.” She said, “Over time, the memory of this fellow citizen who died to offer us a better life tends to fade away in the memories of the past. But we don’t want that to happen. We want his indomitable life to be a timeless testimony. That’s why we want to remember him on Liberation Day. We obviously don’t know who committed such a stupid and offensive act. It could be the painful outburst of someone expressing their despair by disrespecting the funerary decorations of nearby tombs, or it could be driven by absurd and petty intentions. We don’t know who might be responsible for this unfortunate incident, but we hope it doesn’t reflect the ideas that Malvezzi believed in, as that would make the memory of his death even more painful.”
